Building a Business from the Couch: The Unfiltered Truth of WFH Ownership with Kids
Working from home has been part of my life since 2019. From the very beginning, I wanted that specific flexibility because I have kids—four of them, currently ages 14, 8, 6, and 1.
Being present for my family is everything to me. I see my kids every single day. I am at every school event, every after-school activity, and every milestone. For my three youngest, I was able to be home with them through their baby years while simultaneously building my career.
Although this lifestyle is exactly what I wanted, let’s be completely honest: it is hard.
The Reality Behind the Flexibility
When you work from home with a full house, your calendar doesn't just belong to you—it revolves around them.
My Zoom meetings are strategically scheduled around my 1-year-old’s nap time. But nap time doesn't mean "me time." It means putting my head down and working at breakneck speed before the baby wakes up. And when the kids finally go to bed at night, my workday isn't over. Instead of resting, I stay up for hours finishing client deliverables, planning the next day, and prepping for the next project.
There have been stressful days where it felt like absolutely nothing was going right. I’ve had moments where I wanted to throw in the towel and think: “Maybe I should just get a regular job, put the kids in daycare, and call it a day.”
Why I Keep Choosing This Path
Every time those doubts creep in, I land right back on the same truth: I have a vision for my life, and I am determined to see it through.
My goal has always been to build a successful business that is truly my own. I’ve started other ventures before, but Ramirez Accounting & Consulting is the first one that belongs entirely to me—where I am in total control of the vision, the values, and the direction.
Managing schedules while trying to scale a company from the ground up is a constant balancing act. To keep the momentum going, I've taken on odd jobs and side projects just to pay the bills and keep pushing forward. It hasn't been a smooth, linear ride, and I certainly couldn't have done it without the support of my family and friends holding down the fort with me.
To the Parents Waiting for the "Right Time"
As I stay consistent and keep putting in the work, I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I feel like I am so close to that moment of saying, "I did it." At the same time, I know this is only the beginning—there is still so much more I want to achieve.
If you are a parent sitting on the fence, wondering if you can start that business or take that leap while raising your family, I want you to know this: It is possible.
You don't have to choose between being present for your children and being the powerhouse you want to be in your career. It takes grit, late nights, and a solid support system, but the payoff of building something that is completely yours makes every single hard day worth it.
Let’s Build Something Great—Together
Whether your path involves launching your own business, rising in your current career, or chasing a new ambition entirely, your strength as a parent is an asset, not an obstacle. You don't need endless free hours or a flawless setup to start—you just need to take that first step and claim your space.
Building something of your own takes a village, and you shouldn't have to carry every piece of it alone. That’s why I founded Ramirez Accounting & Consulting—to stand alongside fellow business owners and help turn hard work into sustainable success.
